BOOK COVER TUTORIAL

AUGUST 29, 2013

Well, a promise is a promise so here it is the book cover tutorial! My book measured, opened, 16 1/2″x 11 3/4″ and it is a standard A4 book. You can buy them really cheap at big stores (I got mine for 50 cents each). Hope you enjoy this and happy sewing!

Book cover tutorial

You’ll need

1 piece of fabric for the outside with 18″x 12 3/4″

1 piece of fabric for the inside with 18″x 12 3/4″

2 pieces of fabric for the inside flaps with 6″x 12 3/4″

Ribbons and labels for decorating

How to

Cut your fabrics accurately. These measures are for a cover of an A4 book but you can easily make it for any other size! Simply measure the height of the book and the width of it opened and add 1” to the height and 1 ½” to the width. That will be your measures for the outside and inside fabrics. For the flaps you can use the same width I used and adjust the height accordingly.

Start by folding the two pieces of fabric for the flaps in half, height wise, and iron them in place.

Stitch a line at ¼” of the folded flap fabric. Repeat for the other piece of fabric.

Pick up your fabric for the outside of the cover and draw a line with a heat disappearing pen at 3 ½” from the bottom.

Using pins place your ribbon of choice aligned with the line you just made and stitch it in place.

Using a piece of leftover fabric a little bit bigger than the tag you want to place in the front, stitch it in place at 3 “ of the top and centered in the front. Use decorative stitches to add a bit more of fun! After that, stitch the label you choose on top.

Now it is time to layer all the pieces. Begin by securing the flaps to the inside fabric using pins, on the right side of it. Make sure the edge of each flap is aligned with each edge of the fabric. Then add the outside fabric right facing the inside one. Secure with pins.

Stitch all around the four sides leaving an opening of about 3” to turn the fabrics. Make sure you clip a bit of fabric on the corners so they stay pretty when reversed.

After turning the fabrics, iron well around the edges and after that fold the cover in half, vertical wise, and press on the middle so that the center of the cover is found.

Stitch around all the cover as closer to the edge as you can. This will close the opening that was left for turning. Stitch all the way on the centerline so that the middle of the book is well marked.

Place your book inside the cover passing the covers inside the flaps and you are done! Happy sewing everyone!

PEQUENOS CESTOS

MAY 10, 2011

This is one of the projects on my list and that I can finally check! I decided to make a step by step instructions of these practical storage baskets. I made these with 10″ square fabrics and other one with 12″ (on the last photo). For each basket you will need two 10″ squares of fabric for the outside, two 10″ squares of fabric for the inside and two 10″ squares of batting. To make them bigger or smaller just change all of the measurements.

Make a sandwich placing the batting first, then the outside fabric, with the right side of the fabric facing out and then the inside fabric with the right side facing it. Afterwards just sew on one of the sides.

Reforce as costura no princípio e no fim.

Repeat this operation with the other set of fabrics and then, opening them, face the right sides of both rectangles and sew all around them leaving a small opening on the bottom of the inside fabric so that later you can turn your basket around. Backstitch in the beginning and in the end.

Open the four corners and secure them with pins.

Draw a line in each one of the corners at a 2″ distance from the outside line. Sew on top of each line, backstitching in the beginning and in the end.

Cut out each one of the corners at a 1/2″ distance from de line and turn your work around.

Feche a abertura deixada no tecido interior.

Close the opening left on the inside fabric.

Coloque o tecido interior para dentro e cosa a toda a volta do cesto.

Put the inside fabric inside and sew all around the basket.

Here they are, the big one and the small, ready to go into action with the million things one needs at a baby diaper changing table!

CLUTCH TUTORIAL

SEPTEMBER 30, 2011

The peaceful days in the country are long over but there was still time to make this sweet clutch! If you want to reproduce it, here are the instructions!
– 2 pieces of inner fabric with 17″X 10 1/2″
– 2 pieces of outside fabric with 17″X 10 1/2″
– 2 pieces of interfacing with 17″X 10 1/2″
– 2 pieces of inner fabric with 8″x13″
– 1 button

Start by attaching the interfacing with an hot iron to the inside of the outside fabric.

With a table dish (this is a small trick from a practical person) round up one of the corners on the biggest size of the rectangle of the outer fabric, marking with a pen. Cut by the mark.

Use the small piece of fabric you have cut out to mark the opposite corner on the outer fabric and the two equivalent corners on the inner fabric. Cut out all three of them.

With a pin, mark the middle of one of the pieces of outer fabric (on the opposite side of where you have removed the corners) and with the help of a ruller mark 2 1/2″ to each side of the center pin. Repeat the operation with all three other pieces of fabric.

Make a pleat in each piece of fabric by aligning the side pins with the center pin, making the fabric fold on each side.

Close the pleat on each piece by stitching over the folds with the sewing machine.

Colocando as duas peças exteriores direito com direito, prenda-as a toda a volta com alfinetes.

Place the two pieces of outside fabric, right sides together and secure them with pins. Repeat this operation with the two pieces of inner fabric.

With pins, mark the distance of 2″ from the top on the two sides of each group of fabric and stitch all around it below the mark, backstitching in the begining and in the end..

Turn the outside fabric inside out and place the inner fabric inside of it, securing with pins.

With each piece of inner fabric, make a bias tape with the help of an hot iron.

Place each piece of “bias tape” of fabric on the top of each side of the bag, folding it towards the inside in the beggining and the end. Secure with pins.

Stitch all around the piece of fabric, on both sides of the clutch.

Fold the fabric down so that it overlaps the outter fabric. If you want, take the bag to an haberdashery store so they can place a closing of some sort on the inside of it. Stitch a big button on the front.

Agora mãos à obra e fico à espera de ver o vosso resultado final!
Now get to work and I look forward to see your final result!
